Parent Briefing — 6 November 2026

Today's roundup covers a major new study on newborn vitamin K, two product recalls, and a new measles case in Colorado involving an infant too young for routine vaccination.

Vitamin K refusals linked to higher bleeding risk

A large study published November 5 in JAMA Pediatrics found that the share of U.S. newborns not receiving the routine vitamin K injection more than doubled from 3.1% in 2017 to 6.8% in 2025. Infants who did not receive the shot had a 47% higher risk of bleeding in the first six months and more than twice the risk of intracranial bleeding. Death during the birth hospitalization with a bleeding diagnosis was also more common.

What parents should do: Discuss the vitamin K shot with your pediatrician before delivery. The injection has been standard for decades to prevent vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB), which can be severe or fatal. Oral alternatives are less effective for late-onset bleeding.

Baby Brezza SuperFast Sterilizer Dryer recall

CPSC announced November 5 a recall of about 29,000 Baby Brezza SuperFast Sterilizer Dryers (models BRZ0083, BRZ0154, BRZ0156). The units can overheat while plugged in and operating, with 32 reports of melting or overheating and no injuries reported. Sold from January 2024 through October 2026 at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Target, Babylist, and babybrezza.com for $160–$180.

Action: Stop using the unit, unplug it, and register for a free upgraded SuperQuick replacement at babybrezza.com/pages/recall or call 888-527-9824.

PILLANI nursing pillows

About 25,000 PILLANI nursing pillows (model NP4351, batches 202604/202605/202606) were recalled in late October for violating mandatory nursing-pillow safety standards and posing a suffocation risk. Sold on Amazon April–September 2026 for $30–$40. Stop use and request a refund via pill-ani.com/pages/recall.

Colorado infant measles case after international travel

Colorado reported its 27th measles case of 2026: a Weld County infant too young for routine MMR who had traveled internationally to an outbreak area. Possible exposures occurred October 21–28 at Monfort Family Clinic (Evans) and UCHealth Greeley Hospital and Banner North Colorado Medical Center (Greeley). Watch for fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and rash for 21 days. Early MMR is recommended for infants 6 months and older traveling internationally.

National measles cases remain near 4,852, with multiple state-reported deaths this week. Continue monitoring household MMR status and early dosing recommendations in outbreak areas.
