Three developments from the last 24–48 hours that matter for parents.

1. Vitamin K shot refusals linked to higher bleeding risk

Two large studies published 5–6 November (JAMA and JAMA Pediatrics) show that the share of U.S. newborns not receiving the intramuscular vitamin K dose has risen from 3.1% in 2017 to 6.8% in 2025. Infants without the shot had a 47% higher risk of any bleeding by six months and more than double the risk of intracranial bleeding. Number needed to harm is roughly 114. CDC and AAP still recommend the dose for all newborns. Ask your birth team about the decision and document it.

2. Measles cases reach 5,182; PAHO review next week

CDC reports 5,182 confirmed measles cases in 2026 as of 5 November — highest since 1991. 96% are unvaccinated or of unknown status. This week saw deaths reported in Wisconsin (infant, first in the state since 1990), Pennsylvania (sixth), and New York (7-month-old). PAHO’s Regional Verification Commission meets 10–13 November to review U.S. elimination status. Check household MMR status, including early dosing recommendations in outbreak areas for infants 6–11 months.

3. Active product recalls and checks

Also note recent confirmation of maternal RSV vaccine (RSVpreF) real-world effectiveness (~78% against infant RSV hospitalization through 6 months when given ≥14 days before delivery), complementary to nirsevimab. Discuss timing with your obstetric and pediatric teams.

This is a parent briefing for context, not medical or product advice. Verify recalls on CPSC.gov or FDA.gov and discuss health decisions with your clinicians.
