U.S. measles cases have climbed to 5,182 as of early November, the highest annual total since 1991, with a cluster of infant and child deaths this week in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and New York. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) commission meets November 10–13 to review whether the U.S. retains its measles elimination status. New studies confirm rising vitamin K refusals are linked to higher infant bleeding risks. Multiple product recalls affect sterilizers, playsets, and nursing pillows.
Measles update
The CDC reports 5,182 confirmed cases as of November 5, up 330 from the prior week. About 96% are among unvaccinated or unknown-status individuals. Pennsylvania leads with 1,487 cases, 287 hospitalizations, and 6 measles-associated deaths. Wisconsin reported its first measles death since 1990—an infant. New York reported a 7-month-old death, its first in over 30 years. PAHO’s Regional Verification Commission will examine data for possible re-establishment of endemic transmission (uninterrupted same-strain circulation ≥12 months).
Vitamin K
Two large studies in JAMA and JAMA Pediatrics (published around November 5) show intramuscular vitamin K nonreceipt rose from ~3.1% in 2017 to 6.8% in 2025 among millions of U.S. births. Infants who missed the shot had a 47% higher risk of any bleeding by 6 months and more than double the risk of intracranial bleeding. AAP and CDC continue to recommend the birth dose.
Product recalls parents should check
- Baby Brezza SuperFast Sterilizer Dryer (~29,000 units, models BRZ0083, BRZ0154, BRZ0156): overheating/burn risk. Stop use, contact manufacturer for free replacement. Sold at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Target, etc.
- Arlopu slide playsets (~10,000, models KT-CS17/LY-31): head/neck entrapment risk. One reported trapping incident. Stop use, contact for repair/refund.
- Ongoing: Once Upon a Farm Tractor Wheels bars (choking), certain nursing pillows (suffocation standard violations).
What parents can do
Check household MMR status; discuss early dosing with a clinician in outbreak areas. Ask about the vitamin K birth dose. Check model numbers on sterilizers, playsets, and pillows against CPSC/Health Canada lists. Monitor for fever + rash and isolate if exposed.
