Wisconsin reports first measles infant death since 1990
Wisconsin health officials confirmed an infant death linked to the ongoing measles outbreak in the southwestern part of the state — the first such fatality in the state since 1990. The state has logged 431 cases so far in 2026, the highest in more than 35 years. Most cases are in unvaccinated individuals. Officials are recommending early MMR doses for infants 6–11 months in high-risk areas.
This follows recent measles-related deaths reported in New York and Pennsylvania. Two doses of MMR remain about 97% effective.
New studies: Vitamin K refusals driving higher infant bleeding risk
Two studies published this week (including in JAMA Pediatrics) show life-threatening bleeding episodes in U.S. infants have risen sharply as more parents refuse the routine newborn vitamin K shot. Refusals jumped more than 57% in the first half of 2026. Babies who skipped the shot had a 47% higher risk of bleeding in the first 6 months and more than double the risk of brain bleeding.
The CDC continues to recommend the shot. Experts note the trend coincides with broader mistrust of newborn interventions.
Recall alert: Once Upon a Farm Tractor Wheels bars
The FDA has received reports of complete airway obstruction in toddlers (18–30 months) after eating Once Upon a Farm’s Tractor Wheels Organic Toddler Soft-Baked Bars. Parents should check product packaging and follow the recall guidance if they have the affected bars.
What to watch
- Local health department updates on measles cases and vaccine clinics.
- Any further guidance on vitamin K from AAP or CDC.
- Additional product recalls as flu/RSV season picks up.
