The Nara Organics formula outbreak is over — why parents should still check the pantry

Powdered infant formula lasts a long time on a shelf. That is why a closed outbreak can still matter in your kitchen.

On August 27, 2026, CDC declared over a multistate infant botulism outbreak linked to Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula. Four infants in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington were hospitalized. There were no deaths. Illnesses started in April and May 2026. The company recalled every lot on June 13, 2026 after FDA urged action.

Investigators now see a common contamination source connecting this outbreak and the 2025 ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula outbreak. Two premium powdered formulas, two waves of infant botulism, one implied upstream problem.

## What changed

FDA says recalled Nara Organics product should no longer be for sale. Best-by dates run into 2027. It was sold nationally at Target, Target.com, and Nara.com from July 2025 through June 2026, and not outside the United States. CDC still says: if a can is in the house, do not feed it. Throw it away.

## Background

Infant botulism happens when Clostridium botulinum spores germinate in a baby’s gut and make toxin. Babies under about 12 months are uniquely vulnerable. Powdered formula is not sterile by design. Cronobacter has been the headline powder risk; botulism in formula is rarer — which is why two linked investigations in under a year landed so hard.

The infants received BabyBIG. All four were hospitalized. Watch for poor feeding, a floppy neck, a weak cry, less facial movement, or trouble swallowing.

## Competing views

Agencies argue discard-after-recall is still right because powder sits for months. Some parents argue organic and European-made powder was supposed to be the safer aisle, and that a shared upstream source means households are not the real control point. Clinicians still say treat on the clinical picture, do not wait for a lab if the history includes recalled powder.
