# Parent Briefing: Pennsylvania Measles Update, Bath Seat Recall, and What to Ask at Clinic (October 15, 2026)
Pennsylvania health officials reported 1,222 measles cases on October 14, up 86 from the prior week. The state has logged 225 hospitalizations and five measles-related deaths this year. Nationally, the CDC had confirmed 4,080 cases as of October 8, with only two deaths reflected in its count so far. A sixth death has been reported by a Pennsylvania coroner and is under review.
## What this means for families
Infants under 12 months remain the most vulnerable. Two babies have died in the outbreak, and at least six infants have been born with congenital measles. There is no way to predict which unvaccinated or under-vaccinated child will develop severe complications such as pneumonia or encephalitis.
If your child is under 12 months and you live in or travel to an outbreak area (Pennsylvania, Texas, South Carolina, Utah, New York, and others), ask your pediatrician about early MMR dosing. The second dose can be given as soon as 28 days after the first when risk is high.
## Product alert: baby bath seats
The CPSC recalled about 2,140 ONTHEWEI baby bath seats (model MY002, manufactured 2026/1/10) sold on Amazon. They can tip over, creating a drowning risk. Stop using them, mark “RECALLED,” cut the suction cups, and contact the seller for a refund. Check any bath seat against current CPSC notices.
## Clinic asks this week
1. Confirm household MMR status, including older siblings and caregivers.
2. For babies born in October or entering their first RSV season, ask about nirsevimab (Beyfortus) or clesrovimab (Enflonsia) if maternal RSV vaccination was not given.
3. Review the expanded AAP criteria for second-season RSV protection in high-risk children 8–19 months.
4. Check any gripe water or sleep products for undeclared alcohol (recent lot actions).
