Parent Briefing: Measles Past 4,000 Cases, Pennsylvania Deaths Under Review, Gripe Water Recall Reminder

Parenting · October 16, 2026 · 2 min read · By AnbuBaby

**This week’s key points for parents**

- U.S. measles cases reached 4,080 as of October 8 (CDC), the highest total since 1991. Pennsylvania has 1,222 cases, 225 hospitalizations, and five confirmed measles-associated deaths, with a sixth under review.
- 95% of national cases are in unvaccinated or unknown-status people. Hospitalization is highest among children under 5 (about 15%).
- Two doses of MMR remain 97% effective. Check your family’s status, especially if local outbreaks are active or your child is too young for routine doses.
- Reminder: one lot of Babies’ Magic Tea Baby Sleep Gripe Water (lot 25122bw, best before 12/2028) was recalled for undeclared ethanol, methanol, and isopropanol. Stop use and discard or return it.
- A recent survey shows more Americans trust the AAP and their own pediatrician than federal agencies for childhood vaccine recommendations. When messages differ, start with your clinician.

**What to do today**
1. Confirm MMR records for everyone in the household.
2. If you have an infant under 12 months and measles is circulating nearby, ask your pediatrician about early vaccination or exposure precautions.
3. Check any gripe water or herbal sleep products for the recalled lot.
4. Know the measles symptoms and seek care promptly if they appear after possible exposure.
