Parent Briefing: Measles Cases at 35-Year High, RFK Jr. Comments, Papablic Sleeper Recall (16 October 2026)

**Parent Briefing — 16 October 2026**

Quick household notes from the last 24–48 hours.

### Measles: 4,080 confirmed U.S. cases (highest since 1991)

As of 8 October the CDC reported 4,080 confirmed cases across 47 jurisdictions, mostly outbreak-associated. Pennsylvania remains the epicenter with 1,222 cases reported as of 14 October. Six measles-associated deaths have been reported in Pennsylvania (two infants among them); the state is reviewing a sixth. Official CDC death counts lag because of a change in how measles-related deaths are classified.

On 15 October Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he is confident the Pennsylvania outbreak will be brought to a quick close and noted higher case counts in Mexico and Canada. Local health departments report rising parent interest in MMR vaccination, including catch-up doses so children can return to school.

**Practical steps:** Confirm MMR status for every household member under 5 and anyone who is pregnant or immunocompromised. Write down exposure dates and clinic phone numbers before you call. Infants under 6 months and people with zero doses are at highest risk of severe disease. There is no specific antiviral; support is supportive care plus isolation guidance from your clinician or health department.

### Product recall: Papablic convertible bedside sleepers (15 October)

CPSC announced a recall of about 248 Papablic bedside sleepers with play-yard extensions (model PAPA03001AI, gray exterior, stars-and-moon interior). The mattress can shift, creating an entrapment/suffocation gap, and the latch can fail. Sold on Amazon and papablic.com April 2025–July 2026 (~$190). Stop use immediately and contact Papablic for a refund. No incidents reported so far.

### Still active: Babies’ Magic Tea gripe water

One lot (25122bw, best before 12/2028) of Babies’ Magic Tea Baby Sleep Gripe Water was recalled after FDA testing found undeclared ethanol (~8.3 %), methanol, and isopropanol. Check the lot on the blue box and bottle side panel. Stop use and discard or return.

### What to do today

1. Check any Papablic bedside sleeper for model PAPA03001AI.
2. Scan the nursery for the recalled gripe-water lot.
3. Confirm household MMR doses and clinic contact before any possible exposure.
4. If you have a fever + rash in a young child after travel or known contact, call before walking into a clinic.
