Early flu activity on the West Coast
Hospitals in the Seattle area and San Diego are seeing higher-than-usual flu activity for mid-October. Seattle Children’s reported roughly 150 positive tests in a recent two-week period, levels more typical of early December. Rady Children’s Hospital has noted increased ER visits and hospitalizations, with several children in the ICU. San Diego County data showed only about 13% of residents vaccinated so far this season.
Clinicians recommend getting the flu vaccine now rather than waiting. Everyone 6 months and older is eligible. It takes about two weeks for protection to build. Early activity does not guarantee a severe season, but it shortens the window to get protected before wider spread.
Measles update
U.S. measles cases stand at 4,410 as of the October 15 CDC update (+330 in the prior week). Pennsylvania remains the epicenter at 1,260 cases across 43 counties, 238 hospitalizations, and five confirmed measles-associated deaths (a sixth is under review). Nearly all cases are in unvaccinated people. CDC Epi-Aid support is on the ground in Pennsylvania.
If you live in or near an affected county, check household MMR records. Discuss with your clinician whether an early dose is appropriate for any infant 6–11 months. Two routine doses remain the standard starting at 12 months.
Formula and household checks
FDA continues to urge infant-formula manufacturers to strengthen supplier oversight after the ByHeart and Nara Organics botulism outbreaks (linked by whole-genome sequencing to shared milk suppliers) and a separate cereulide event. A draft petition seeking comments on adding C. botulinum testing of finished product and dairy ingredients has a comment deadline of October 30.
Check any remaining formula lots against current recalls. Watch for classic infant-botulism signs (constipation, weak cry, poor feeding, floppy tone) and seek care promptly if they appear.
Practical steps this week
- Schedule flu vaccines for the household if not already done.
- Review MMR status, especially for anyone traveling or living in transmission areas.
- Confirm safe-sleep setups and remove any recalled items.
- Keep an eye on local respiratory and measles dashboards.
