Parent briefing: Celebrate Babies Week, raw-milk cheddar recall, and measles at 4,410 — 19 October 2026
Short notes from the last day that still change a parent’s next step. Editorial context, not medical or food-safety advice. Confirm details with your pediatrician, local health department, or the FDA/CDC.
1. Celebrate Babies Week runs 19–23 October
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed 19–23 October 2026 as Celebrate Babies Week for the seventh year. The week, which began with the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health, highlights early relationships, family voices, and the professionals who support them. Communities across the U.S. are hosting story times, thank-you events, and resource tables. Visit celebratebabiesweek.org for a community toolkit.
2. Raw mild cheddar recalled for E. coli
Family Farmstead Dairy of Worcester, NY, recalled one lot of Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese (8-ounce packages, lot and best-by 7/22/27) after Maryland testing found Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (including O157:H7 strains). Distributed to grocers in New York, New Jersey, and possibly other Northeast states. No illnesses reported yet. Throw it out or return it. Raw-milk cheeses are aged at least 60 days, but that does not reliably kill E. coli O157:H7. Half the cases in the still-open Sierra Nevada Graziers raw-milk cheese outbreak (13 illnesses, 8 hospitalizations, 3 HUS) were children under 5.
3. Measles remains near 4,410 nationally; Wisconsin at 288
CDC reports 4,410 U.S. cases as of mid-October (+330 in the prior week). Pennsylvania has 1,260 cases across 43 counties, 238 hospitalizations, and 5 state-reported measles-associated deaths. Wisconsin DHS lists 288 confirmed cases as of 16 October, most in the southwest (Grant, Iowa, Lafayette, Vernon). Check your household’s MMR status and ask about an early dose for infants 6–11 months in outbreak counties.
4. Formula supply-chain note
The Nara Organics infant botulism outbreak (4 cases, April–May 2026) was declared over in late August. Whole-genome sequencing linked it to the 2025 ByHeart outbreak through a shared milk supplier (Organic West Milk / Dairy Farmers of America). A citizen petition asking FDA to add Clostridium botulinum testing requirements for infant formula ingredients has a comment deadline of 30 October 2026. Check cabinets for any leftover Nara or ByHeart cans and discard recalled product.
