Short notes from the last day that still change a parent’s next step

Celebrate Babies Week (19–23 October 2026)
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed 19–23 October as Celebrate Babies Week for the seventh consecutive year. The week, which began in Michigan and has spread nationally, focuses on early relationships, infant and early childhood mental health, and supporting families from pregnancy through the early years. Communities are holding events, screenings, and advocacy activities. Parents can look for local programming via celebratebabiesweek.org or state infant-mental-health associations.
Ketamine / esketamine after cesarean and early postpartum depressive symptoms
A meta-analysis presented at the American Society of Anesthesiologists 2026 annual meeting reviewed six randomized trials (1,832 women) of ketamine or esketamine given during or immediately after elective C-section. Scores on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale were modestly lower in the first two weeks postpartum (standardized mean difference −0.36). Authors describe the finding as promising for early symptom relief but note it is too early to conclude that the drugs prevent clinically diagnosed postpartum depression or should be used routinely. Larger studies with longer follow-up are planned. Breastfeeding transfer appears low; this remains research, not a recommendation.
Measles
CDC reported 4,410 confirmed U.S. measles cases as of 15 October. Pennsylvania continues as the largest outbreak (1,260 cases, 238 hospitalizations, five measles-associated deaths as of 16 October). CDC is deploying Epidemic Intelligence Service support. Nearly all cases are in unvaccinated or unknown-status individuals. Household MMR status and early-dose discussions for eligible infants remain the practical steps in affected areas.
Ongoing product notes
Earlier October recalls (Papablic bedside sleepers, one lot of Babies’ Magic Tea gripe water with undeclared alcohols) remain in effect for those who have the products. Check lot numbers against official notices. What to watch: local Celebrate Babies Week events, any further measles updates from PA and CDC, and whether the ketamine findings lead to larger prospective trials.
