Parent briefing: Celebrate Babies Week, early flu, measles at 4,410, and sports safety — 19 October 2026
Short notes from the last day that still change a parent plan. Editorial context, not medical advice.
#

Celebrate Babies Week (19–23 October)
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed October 19–23, 2026 as Celebrate Babies Week for the seventh consecutive year. The week, started by the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health, highlights early relationships, perinatal and infant mental health, and support for families and early childhood professionals. Visit celebratebabiesweek.org for ways to participate. Michigan also observes October as Infant Safe Sleep Month.
#

Early flu activity on the West Coast
Hospitals in the Seattle area and San Diego continue to report higher-than-usual flu activity for mid-October. Seattle Children’s has seen case levels typically reserved for December. Public health officials urge households to get flu shots now rather than waiting until the end of the month. National activity remains low outside the West.
#

Measles remains at 4,410 cases
CDC data as of 15–16 October still shows 4,410 confirmed U.S. cases for 2026, with Pennsylvania reporting 1,260 across 43 counties, 238 hospitalizations, and 5 confirmed measles-associated deaths (a sixth under review). Ninety-six percent of cases are unvaccinated or of unknown status. Clinic asks remain the same: catch-up MMR for eligible household members and discussion of an early dose for 6–11-month infants in high-transmission counties.
#

Sports complex safety note
On 17 October a pickup truck drove onto a youth soccer field at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring 10 others. The driver has been released pending toxicology and vehicle inspection. Parents attending outdoor youth sports can review parking layouts, exit routes, and supervision plans with coaches and facilities.
#

Other reminders
- Papablic convertible bedside sleepers (model PAPA03001AI) recalled 15 October for mattress displacement and latch failure risks (suffocation/entrapment). Stop use and contact the company for refund.
- Check remaining Nara Organics or ByHeart formula lots against FDA recall notices; the shared milk-powder investigation is closed but shelf-stable product may still be in homes.
- Gripe-water lot 25122bw (Babies’ Magic Tea) contained undeclared alcohols; discard if present.
