Parent Briefing: CDC Measles Cases Hit 4,410, Papablic Bedside Sleeper Recall, Primark Phthalate Purses (16 October 2026)

The CDC reported 4,410 confirmed U.S. measles cases as of October 15, 2026 — an increase of 330 from the prior week. Pennsylvania accounts for 1,222 of those cases as of October 14, with 225 hospitalizations. The state has confirmed five measles-associated deaths; a sixth reported by a Franklin County coroner remains under review. The CDC currently lists only two measles-associated deaths nationally and has shifted to using National Center for Health Statistics mortality data. CDC is deploying additional support to Pennsylvania.

On October 15 the CPSC announced a recall of about 248 Papablic convertible bedside sleepers (model PAPA03001AI, gray with stars-and-moon interior). The mattress can shift, creating a suffocation gap between the pad and the bottom of the product. The latching mechanism can also fail, risking collapse, entrapment, and falls. Units were sold on Amazon and papablic.com from April 2025 through July 2026 for about $190. Stop use immediately. Contact [email protected] for the refund process (proof of destruction required).

Also on October 15, Primark recalled about 2,100 101 Dalmatians faux leather children’s coin purses (model 2595301) sold in U.S. stores from March through June 2026 for about $9. The purses contain elevated phthalate levels. Phthalates have been associated with developmental and hormonal effects if ingested in sufficient amounts. Return to a Primark store for a full refund. The same purse was recalled in the UK in early September.

Reminder: one lot of Babies’ Magic Tea Baby Sleep Gripe Water (lot 25122bw, best before 12/2028) was recalled earlier in October after FDA testing found undeclared ethanol (~8.3%), methanol, and isopropanol. Stop use and discard or return any bottles from that lot.

Household steps this week:
- Check any bedside sleeper or play-yard product against the Papablic model number.
- Keep the recalled Primark purse away from toddlers and return it.
- Confirm gripe-water lot numbers before use.
- For measles protection: ensure household MMR status is up to date. Infants under 12 months remain the highest-risk group; discuss early-dose options with your clinician if you live in or travel to outbreak areas (especially Pennsylvania and other high-case jurisdictions). High community coverage protects those too young to be vaccinated.
