A short briefing for parents, 30 September 2026 late-morning wrap. Editorial context, not medical advice.
## 1. AAP rewrote the childhood UTI playbook
On 28 September, Pediatrics published the first UTI guideline update since 2011. Age range is now 8 days to 5 years. Race is no longer a risk factor. Most children get 7 days of antibiotics or less. After 28 days of age, oral medicine is the default. After a first febrile UTI, the panel wants a kidney-and-bladder ultrasound.

A 72-hour evaluation window for some older infants is a ceiling, not a reason to wait with a young baby who looks unwell.
## 2. World Meningitis Day is Monday 5 October
Five days. The useful household move is still the same: fever plus poor feeding or unusual sleepiness in a young infant is a same-day call. Hib, pneumococcal, and meningococcal vaccines prevent some — not all — bacterial meningitis.
## 3. Leftover this week
- Continental-US RSV immunization window opens 1 October. Ask the birth hospital or clinic who has stock.
- Children 6 months through 8 years who have not had two lifetime flu doses still need two shots at least 28 days apart.
- ABC Trading dollar-bin light-up toys: button-battery doors that open with a fingernail. CPSC recall 26-799.
- Unanchored Aitjunz dressers remain a tip-over problem if one is still in a nursery.
This is editorial context, not a recommendation for any household.
