As of late October 2026, the United States is experiencing its highest measles activity in decades, with cases approaching 5,000, while the 2026-27 influenza season has already claimed its first pediatric life.

Measles Surge

The CDC reported 4,852 confirmed measles cases as of October 29, 2026 — more than double the full-year total for 2025. Nearly all cases (96%) are among unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status. Pennsylvania has reported five measles-associated deaths. Hospitalizations stand at over 500. Most infections are outbreak-associated, with cases in 47 jurisdictions.

Two doses of MMR vaccine remain about 97% effective. Health officials urge vaccination to prevent further spread and protect vulnerable infants too young for the vaccine.

Flu Season Update

The first child death of the 2026-27 influenza season has been reported. Flu activity is rising earlier than usual in some regions. Last season saw 198 pediatric flu deaths, the majority in unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated children. CDC and AAP recommend annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older.

What Parents Should Do

These developments highlight the importance of routine immunizations in protecting young children from preventable diseases.
