First Texas Dad Holds Premature Twins with Wearable Skincubator: What Parents Should Know

The scale of the 2026 measles surge

As of early October 2026, the United States has recorded more than 4,000 confirmed measles cases — the highest annual total since 1991. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 4,080 cases as of October 8, with

In Houston, a father became the first in Texas to hold his 26-week premature twins skin-to-skin using a wearable device called the Skincubator. Dorian and Tiffany Ojemen’s twins, Silas and Simone, had spent nearly two weeks in traditional NICU incubators before the hospital introduced the technology as part of a clinical trial at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

The Skincubator is a non-electrical, wearable cover that creates a warm, humidified environment on a parent’s chest while the infant remains connected to monitoring and respiratory support. It has FDA Breakthrough Device Designation and is designed to increase the hours of kangaroo care possible for the most fragile preterms — a practice linked to better temperature regulation, bonding, and in some studies improved outcomes.

Parents of premature babies should ask their NICU team whether similar options or research participation are available, and continue to follow unit protocols for holding and infection control. This remains investigational; results from ongoing trials will determine broader availability.
